Davie fire department, vanilla ice, broward pool builder

On Tuesday, January 13, 2015, we began digging a pool for a very deserving family with the help of Vanilla Ice and the Darrell Gwynn Foundation.

Several news stations were on site, including the Sun-Sentinel, and this is the amazing response we've received:

Sun-Sentinel News

"A Davie fire truck recently pulled up to Derek Avilez's home.

In it was Rob Van Winkle, aka Vanilla Ice. The music star-turned-host of "The Vanilla Ice Project" home improvement show surprised the Hollywood fireman who was paralyzed while skimboarding four years ago. Avilez is receiving a customized pool donated by Van Kirk & Sons Pools and Spas, in partnership with the Darrell Gwynn Foundation."

Next Tuesday, we will be breaking ground on a custom pool being built free of charge with the help of Vanilla Ice to better the lives of the Avilez family.

Derek Avilez, a volunteer speaker for the Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s Education & Prevention Program, sustained a spinal cord injury while skim boarding at the beach with his family four years ago. Avilez was a firefighter and paramedic prior to his injury and the pool will assist him in is rehabilitation. We're so excited to work on this project!

Happy Halloween!

We celebrated Halloween last Friday (October 31st) and hosted our first costume contest! Our office was full of witches, bunnies, and a few superheros. After a delicious catered lunch, we tallied the votes!

On August 22, 2014, Van Kirk Pools & Spas took on the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS. Many of their friends, family, and coworkers have lost or known someone dear to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. As a family owned company, they have decided to take a stand and help raise awareness for Lou Gehrig’s Disease research. They have nominated Vanilla Ice, Chris Gamble, and Moss Construction to also participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge!

When the Branstetters came to the Van Kirk family to create a water feature for their home, we were curious. Their design incorporated a 5’ x 10’  Koi pond and a 3’ X 8’ waterfall wall with stairs to house a statue. The water feature had to be built on the North side of the property with the flow of the fountain to be moving towards the house. We got a little curious and started doing our own research.

The purpose of the customer’s water feature was to promote prosperity and good fortune in the Career Path/ Business section of their home. We needed to create a pond that could hold animal life as well as encompass the desired feng shui features our customers desired. The product: a magnificent fountain built as a shrine to the Yellow Dzambhala, bringer of wealth and prosperity; empowered by the Koi fish and North position. All of the components as well as the elements of the design were based on Black Sect Feng Shui practices. The pond runs parallel to the home and can be seen from the living room through a large glass door. Having this feature in front of a door with the water moving towards the home brings positive flowing energy to the Career Path/ Business side (North direction) of the house.

The Van Kirk Family has assembled some of your most frequently asked questions about your new Van Kirk Pool and we’re going to be diving into first topic, which is setting up your pool.

Each newly built pool must go through a few startup procedures and cycling period to ensure proper water quality so your family can safely enjoy taking the first dip into your new Van Kirk Pool.

Summer fun in the sun is in full swing and we hope you’re all enjoying the warm summer days by the pool with friends and family. But the fun doesn’t have to end there; Van Kirk & Sons are always developing ways to turn up the night in your own backyard. Among the array of products available to complete an evening, outdoor pool experience, we'd like to feature how Van Kirk's glow-in-the-dark tile was the perfect finishing touch to this Palm Beach oasis.

Located in the heart of Cooper City, Florida, Monterra Jefferson offers residents luxury homes and bountiful outdoor living. This community pool by Van Kirk & Sons features a wet edge design, decorative pergolas, built-in BBQ stations and spacious sundecks for soaking up the sunrays. Go ahead and take a virtual dip for more photos and don't forget the sunblock.

Ice is back with a brand new renovation! For a brand new season of The Vanilla Ice Project on the DIY Network, Vanilla Ice and Van Kirk kick down the doors of another abandoned neighborhood eyesore and turn it to an alluring mansion full of extravagance and style.

Since Ice teamed up with Van Kirk & Sons, they've developed an amazing dynamic with a dramatic and over-the-top style seen throughout their former lavish, lagoon style pool with a lazy river. On this project, located in Palm Beach, a 6,300 square foot, lakefront property lent Vanilla Ice and Van Kirk a blank canvas to let their imaginations run free. For what was once an unmaintained, messy backyard, has resulted in a majestic retreat of aquatic amenities. The pool design actually consists of three pools in one, joining a swim-up bar one side, a 25-person hot tub on the other, and an infinity-edge pool in the center. Adorned with fire pits to heat up the night and glow-in-the-dark tiles to mimic fireflies, the pool transforms into a swanky outdoor, poolside lounge minus the velvet rope.

And that’s exactly what’s expected from the former entertainer. His passion is translated throughout everything he touches. There’s no telling what they’ll think of next, but you can expect it will be “cool as ice.” Check out the video and photos below, and be sure to check out The Vanilla Ice Project and Van Kirk & Sons, airing on HGTV, DIY Network and on the DIY Network To Go mobile app.
